What Is A Transmission Rack?
Transmission rack is a construction that is used to store and protect transmission devices.
These devices are needed either to transfer signals from control to executive equipment or to transmit power.
Thus, there is some concrete difference between various types of transmission racks despite that they look quite the same.
We’ll discuss these particular qualities later in this FAQ.
What Types Of Transmission Racks Can KDM Produce?
# 1. Standard Transmission Rack
This type of transmission racks is the most widespread and made accordingly to the general standards for such a piece of equipment.
KDM transmission racks can be used in a huge array of applications, from manufacturing sites to telecom rooms.
If you want to require more information about this line of items, please, leave us a quote using the following form.
# 2. M/W Racks
M/W is an abbreviation for the medium wave.
As you may know, the mediumwave transmission is the most popular way to send signals in the modern era.
However, it is necessary to use certain materials and design solutions to help waves to pass through the rack without interference.
KDM specialists consider the above-mentioned specifications to produce the most qualitative M/W racks for personal and business purposes.
# 3. Indoor Battery Rack
KDM indoor battery racks surround internal components with industrial-designed metal parts to protect the energy equipment from various hazards.
These systems can provide an optimal solution for customers’ environmental constraints.
Despite that the indoor use seems to be more secure, it doesn’t mean that there is no protection needed.
For example, indoor battery racks can be exposed to dust, moisture, or even fungus.
Thus, KDM uses special materials and finishing techniques to avoid damage to battery systems stored in such racks.
# 4. Server Racks
A server rack is a construction used to safely store various technical equipment including routers, switches, hubs, and servers.
Server racks are typically going to be used by businesses and kept either in data centers or communications closets.
The most significant advantages of server racks are as follows:
- Organization: server racks are typically tall structures that can hold many pieces of equipment in one location. This helps keep things organized and maximizes the use of floor space. Multiple racks can also be installed side-by-side in long rows.
- Proper and convenient wiring: a qualitative rack has a certain construction to help with wire management. It is possible to run hundreds of power, network, and other cables through these racks while keeping them safe and organized.
- Efficient cooling: keeping IT equipment cool is often a big challenge, but server racks are designed to make airflow easy and can include fans and other cooling equipment when they are needed.
- Security: server racks are made of robust materials and will usually come with locks on the doors to prevent unwanted access. The doors also help to prevent accidental bumping or touching of power buttons or cables, that might cause significant issues.
# 5. ETSI Rack
The ETSI standards for transmission racks are defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETS 300 119).
If you open this bunch of rules, you’ll see that the distance of the right edge of the right mounting rail to the left edge of the left mounting rail is 535 millimeters (21.1 in).
As 535 mm is very close to 21 inches, these racks are sometimes called 21-inch racks, however, it is not the official name.
Also, these standards define that the gap between the posts is 500 millimeters (19.69 in).
As 19-inch equipment has a maximum width of 17 1⁄4 inches (438.15 mm), they can easily be mounted in an ETSI rack through an ETSI bracket or the so-called adapter plate.
In contrast to the 19-inch standard, ETSI also defined the size of the rack enclosure: the four allowed widths are 150, 300, 600, 900 millimeters (5.9, 11.8, 23.6, 35.4 in) and two allowed depths are 300 and 600 millimeters (12 and 24 in).
Also, the hole spacing has to be precise: 25 mm (0.98 inches).
# 6. MDF Rack
MDF (main distribution frame) is a signal frame for connecting equipment to cables and subscriber carrier equipment.
All cable copper pairs supplying services through user telephone lines are terminated at the MDF and distributed through the MDF to equipment within the local exchange.
Like other distribution frames, the MDF provides flexibility in assigning facilities, at a lower cost and higher capacity than a patch panel.
The most common kind of large MDF is a long steel rack accessible from both sides.
On one side, termination blocks are arranged horizontally at the front of rack shelves.
Jumpers lie on the shelves and go through an insulated steel hoop to run vertically to other termination blocks that are arranged vertically.
There is a hoop or ring at the intersection of each level and each vertical. Installing a jumper historically required two workers, one on either side of the MDF.
The shelves are shallow enough to allow the rings to be within arm’s reach, but the workers prefer to hang the jumper on a hook on a pole so their partner can pull it through the ring.
A fanning strip at the back of each termination block prevents the wires from covering each other’s terminals.
With disciplined administration, the MDF can hold over a hundred thousand jumpers, with dozens changed every day, for decades without tangling.
# 7. DDF Rack
DDF stands for the digital distribution frame.
It is quite a similar concept with MDF racks, however, there are some meaningful distinctions.
While the main distribution frame is used to achieve and transfer main signals, a digital distribution frame is needed to provide digital signals to the equipment.
Also, the digital distribution frame can transfer signals wirelessly, while the better part of the main distribution frames utilizes wires for such a purpose.
# 8. 19 Inch Transmission Rack
A 19-inch rack is a standardized frame that is used for the mounting of several electronic equipment modules.
Each module has a front panel that is 19 inches or 482.6 mm wide.
Such modules have a special fastening part on each side that allows them to be easily installed on the rack frame with screws or other tools.
You can find this type of transmission rack in a wide array of applications: computer servers, telecommunications equipment, networking hardware, audiovisual production, and scientific equipment to name a few.
19-inch transmission racks can also differ between each other.
A standard 19-inch transmission rack is typically 42u in height, 24 inches wide, and 36 inches deep.
We’ll explain the above-mentioned “U” letter later in this FAQ.
Speaking of modern transmission racks, they might come with adjustable mounting rails so you can place them at a shorter depth if required.
There are also special transmission racks manufactured for certain applications (for example, soundproof server racks, air-conditioned server racks, NEMA rated, seismic rated, open frame, narrow, miniature 19-inch racks for smaller applications, and so on).
Transmission racks that carry telecom equipment like routers and switches often have extra width to accommodate multiple cables on the sides.
# 9. Open Transmission Rack
An open rack is an Open Compute Project standard for a new rack and power delivery architecture and an efficient, scalable alternative to the 19-inch transmission rack.
It differs from the 19″ rack in that it was designed specifically for large scale cloud deployments.
There are several key features that make this rack design more efficient to deploy, maintain, and operate.
The power to all of the compute, storage, or network devices is supplied by a pair of bus bars located in the rear of the rack.
The bus bars are supplied with 48V DC by a shelf of power supplies which provides efficient conversion from the local (usually 3-phase) AC mains supply.
Typically, the IT equipment that fits into such a rack is 21″ or 538 mm wide.
This is a 15% increase in frontal area that provides more airflow to the inner items, enabling the data center to reduce cooling costs.
The vertical spacing is also taller to accommodate better airflow and structurally better enclosures that do not sag and interfere with adjacent equipment.
All of the cables and interconnects are made from the front of the rack and the IT equipment is hot-pluggable and serviceable from the front of the rack.
Service personnel no longer access the rear of the rack or need to work in the hot aisle.
How Transmission Racks Are Connected With The Telecom Industry?
Some transmission racks can be used for purposes of the telecommunications business.
As you may see from the aforesaid description of KDM items, some of the transmission racks are used in server rooms or telecom rooms.
However, not all transmission racks are connected with the telecommunication industry (for example, battery racks).
Can You Name Main Components That Can Be Stored In The Transmission Rack?
Exact components of the transmission rack depend on the chosen type of item.
As an example, server racks typically store switches, routers, servers, wires, etc.
If you pick DDF or MDF transmission racks, they will typically store distribution frames, wires, and other connective devices.
If you want to learn more about equipment that can be stored inside KDM transmission racks, please, leave us a quote using the form that can be found practically on every page of our website.
What Kind Of Mounting Options Do I Have With Transmission Racks?
Due to the specific design of standard transmission racks, we can only offer two mounting options:
- Free-standing rack.
- The rack that is mounted on rollers.
The second option is more preferred because such racks can be easily moved on the floor so you can replace them with ease when needed.
Also, if you require small transmission racks, it is possible to put them on the wall with the help of fasteners.
How To Differ Transmission Rack And Enclosure?
Transmission enclosures serve practically the same role as racks.
However, there is one clear difference between them: while racks are open and have no sidewalls, transmission enclosures are closed on each side.
Thus, it is better to use enclosures when you need to protect transmission devices from environmental influence.
However, it is important to notice that racks are better than enclosures in terms of ventilation.
When it comes to equipment that emits a lot of heat while operating, enclosures might be additionally equipped with heat control systems, including coolers, fans, etc.
In the case of racks, such means might not be needed because of the open construction of such items.
What Is A “U” Letter Mean For Transmission Rack Dimensions?
U is the standard unit of measure for designating the vertical usable space or height of transmission racks.
It refers to the space between shelves on a rack.
This unit of measure might also be used when we are talking about cabinets and enclosures.
Note: 1U is equal to 1.75 inches.
For example, a rack designated as 20U has 20 rack spaces for equipment and has 35 (20 x 1.75.) inches of vertical usable space.
Rack and cabinet spaces and the equipment which fit into them are all measured in U as well.
Can You Help Me With Designing Of The Transmission Rack?
Proper designing solutions might guarantee the long-lasting and effective operation of the transmission rack.
If you have no possibility to create your own schematics, you don’t have to worry, because KDM staff members have all the needed skills to provide needed design solutions for your exact application.
It takes only a single working day to provide you the complete drawing of your future transmission rack.
What Data Should I Consider When Choosing The Transmission Rack For My Application?
There are five main considerations that you should acknowledge when buying transmission racks.
# 1. Size
A properly chosen data center server rack should fit the dimensions of the equipment.
Despite that standard transmission racks are always the same nominal width, the height and depth can vary.
The width and depth of the rack are typically measured in standard units.
The most popular standard data center racks have a width of 19 inches and a height of 42U (73.5 inches high).
# 2. Flexibility and manageability
For a flexible and easy-to-manage cabling environment, enough usable space should be left in the rack cabinet after the devices being installed.
In addition, some data center server racks even have wheels in case the racks should be moved.
# 3. Enough weight capacity
With more and more devices are added to the data center, the network racks should have enough weight capacity.
The number of switches, cables, PDU and overhead cable mounts should all be considered during the selection of a rack.
Selecting a strong rack is necessary for the equipment safety.
# 4. Cooling efficiency
The cooling cost of the data center is keeping increasing nowadays.
Proper data center server racks contribute to cooling efficiency.
Racks with airflow management accessories could be a good choice.
Some other accessories like the door of the racks can also affect the cooling regime.
Most of the rack doors provide at least 64 percent perforation for proper airflow.
# 5. Security
Some devices in data centers might need security protection.
Thus, doors, side panels, and roofs can be installed on the data center server racks.
The designs of these accessories also come in various types according to applications.
How Transmission Rack Protects Inner Electronics? Can I Use It Outdoors?
It is not recommended to use transmission racks outdoors.
As we understood from the previous questions, a rack is an open unit, so when used outside, the possibility of water getting to the precious equipment is obvious.
Moreover, even while you use your rack indoors, it still might be exposed to some dangers, like dust or fungus.
Thus, it is necessary to constantly check the conditions of your equipment and maintain it properly.
What Kind Of Extra Accessories Can Be Installed In A Transmission Rack?
Datacenter server rack can hold all standard rack-mountable equipment, as long as it isn’t too deep for the rack cabinet or too high to fit in the available rack spaces.
The equipment often includes removable mounting brackets that fasten to the vertical rack rails with screws.
Heavier equipment may also include horizontal rails or rack shelves that mount in the rack to provide extra support.
Other rack accessories that support the operation of the production equipment includes UPS systems, PDUs, cable managers, switches, patch panels, and fiber enclosures.
