Static DC Circuit Breaker

A static DC circuit breaker is a device made up of materials that can interrupt a current from its continuous flow within a circuit. This type of circuit breaker is quick and reliable. They work by the use of semiconductor products, which transfer current as long as the voltage is positive. The transfer of current stops when the voltage becomes negative.

Key Features

Static DC circuit breakers are faster and very sensitive in operation making the circuit-breaking process very quick and reliable.

Secondly, the working process of a static DC circuit breaker is synchronized and uninterrupted making a continuous process.

Another feature is that it works through a thyristors system whereby if an error occurs, the current flow is interrupted. This is because there won’t be any firing of thyristors through the gates.

The current flow through this system can be easily reset because it uses a switch that can be operated manually.

Besides, a static DC circuit breaker can handle high inrush current and high voltage.

Application

Static DC circuit breakers can be applied in residential housings, industries, hotels or commercial complexes.

However, static DC circuit breakers must be installed for every circuit making them expensive if they were to be used for residential housings.

They are therefore more suitable for industrial applications where less maintenance is needed.

Some of the industries that use static DC circuit breakers include automotive, construction, and food and beverage.
