Ultimate FAQ Guide to Stainless Steel Hose Clamps

What Type Of Stainless Steel Is Used For Hose Clamps?

Stainless steel is a mixture of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and other metals with the iron-carbon alloy.

Steel grades differ in the content or proportions of all these additives.

Stainless steel hose clamps are manufactured from steel grades 304, 316, 400, 300, 101, and 301.

Grade 101 is made up of chromium, nickel, manganese, and iron.

This grade is hardenable through cold-working, and it is not typically used for hose clamps, but can be.

Grade 300 is a series of chromium-nickel alloys.

Grades 301, 304, and 316 are popular from this series.

Grade 301 is highly ductile, easily weldable, and more wear-resistant that grade 304.

Thus, if you need these properties, 301 is a good choice.

Grade 304 is cheaper and more common in general use than grade 316, but less corrosion-resistant.

316 stainless steel grade protects the best against salt spray, certain acids and bases, and high temperatures because of its higher concentration of molybdenum.

This is why stainless steel hose clamps are most often manufactured from steel grade 316.

Finally, grade 400 is another series.

It is an iron-chromium alloy that has great heat-resistance properties, but less corrosion-resistance than the 300 series.

Do Stainless Steel Hose Clamps Rust?

Stainless steel does not rust for a long time.

It can get stained by high heat or harsh water, but it is not rust.

Everything depends on the application.

If the environment has harsh chemicals, like acids and bases, stainless steel can get corroded, and the hose clamp will have to be replaced.

For most applications, though, rusting will take a long time.

What Are The Different Types Of Hose Clamps?

There are 6 most common types of stainless steel hose clamps: T-bolt hose clamps, embossed hose clamps, worm gear hose clamps, spring hose clamps, wire hose clamps, and ear hose clamps.

T-bolt hose clamps can be adjustable with the bolt, making them highly versatile.

They can be adjusted with a hex-nut.

T-bolt adjustable hose clamp

T-bolt adjustable hose clamp

T-bolt clamps are designed for high pressure pipes and hoses, such as turbo pressure hoses and coolant hoses for high pressure engines.

These clamps have a small grub screw that pulls the two halves of the clamp together to securely fasten heavy-duty hoses.

Embossed hose clamps have smoother, rounded edges than most other clamp types.

They are also improved versions of screw clamps, preventing the sharp clamp edges from damaging the hose–thus the rounded edges.

Embossed edges

 Embossed edges

Worm gear hose clamps are also known as screw or band clamps.

They are mostly used to fasten piping sections in the water and plumbing industry.

At one end of the band, a screw protrudes, cinching upward around the hose, like the motion of a worm—hence the name.

Spring hose clamps are able to spring back to their original shape after being altered.

This makes spring clamps ideal for coolant hoses in an engine or other such applications in which the hose diameter changes.

These clamps are tightened with pliers, and come in many shapes and sizes.

Wire hose clamps are for heavy duty clamping.

They are made from bent steel, and have a predefined, unchanging size.

There are eyelets on either end of the clamp, through which you insert a screw and tighten until the hose is secured as best as possible or necessary.

Wire hose clamps

Wire hose clamps

Ear hose clamps are named as such due to its closing mechanism, which looks like a human ear.

Ear clamp pliers permanently deform the closing mechanism when secured.

This is particularly useful for hoses that move around but don’t experience changes of pressure.

Ear hose clamp

 Ear hose clamp

KDM also offers a two-ear hose clamp design.

Some lesser-used hose clamp designs include V-band, aerospace, O-clip, superclamp, wing clip, band-it, quick-release, omage, and thumb-screw clamps.

V-band hose clamps—also commonly known as V-clamps—are frequently used in the heavy-duty and performance vehicle market, Diesel engine exhaust, turbochargers, filter housings, as well as various general industrial applications.

V-band hose clamp

This is due to their tight-sealing capabilities of various flanged pipes.

Aerospace hose clamps, which are also called Mil Spec—or “military specification”.

This tangential worm-screw type clamp is used on fuel, oil, air and coolant lines.

These clamps are for specialty applications and they follow specific guidelines, such as MS-35842 and AA-52506C.

O-clip hose clamps are just another name for ear and double-ear clamps.

Superclamp hose clamps are heavy-duty T-bolt clamps that provide a uniform, strong high torque and compression.

They are used for agricultural, irrigation, municipal, industrial and quarry or mining applications.

Wing-clip hose clamps are also just another name for ear clamps.

A band-it hose clamp is, essentially, a strip of stainless steel that is wrapped around a hose.

Then, any excess of the band is cut off with a tool.

Band-it hose clamp

Once cut and banded, these clamps are not reusable, but they are versatile to begin with.

Quick-release hose clamps have a snap-on latch that allows for quick installation and removal, meaning that these hose clamps are reusable.

Quick-release hose clamp

Such hose clamps are also great for use in places that are difficult to service and maintain—instead of trying to unscrew a bolt in an uncomfortable position, the personnel just has to snap a latch open.

Omega hose clamps, which are also called “saddle” clamps, consist of a saddle-shaped half-circle.

Two of these are put together, fastened with 2 bolts, and there you have an omega clamp.

When used alone, these can be great for installation of a hose—fastening it to a wall.

Thumb-screw hose clamps are usually worm-gear type.

They do not require extra tools, because they can be screwed in place with just a worker’s hands.

The cap can be removed to prevent tampering, and it is usually made from a heat-resistant plastic.

What Is A Stainless Steel Hose Clamp Used For?

Hose clamps are also referred to as a hose clip or a hose lock.

Hose clamps are used to attach a hose to a fitting, such as a barb or a nipple.

Stainless steel hose barb_nipple

Stainless steel hose barb/nipple

Hose clamps are typically used in moderate-pressure applications, such as those in the automotive, plumbing, and other miscellaneous industries.

Hose clamps are also frequently used for applications other than their initial intended purpose.

Because they are so versatile, they can even act as a more permanent version of duct tape or wherever a tightening band around something may be necessary.

Stainless steel hose clamps can be involved with anything from various mounts to holding together home or automotive repairs.

As for high pressures—especially with large hoses—the clamp would have to be very strong to be able to withstand the forces expanding it.

At the same time, the clamp should prevent the hose from sliding off the barb/nipple and creating a leak.

For these high-pressure applications, compression fittings, thick crimp fittings, or other such designs are normally used as well.

Stainless steel hose clamps, specifically, are used for corrosive environments like marine and underground applications.

The selection of type and size of hose clamps for a specific application involves factors, such as torque, vibration, and pressure requirements.

Does The Material Of The Hose Matter For A Stainless Steel Hose Clamp?

The hose material does not matter, since stainless steel is not reactive—aside from with acids or bases.

Of course, metal pipes are not made to be used with hose clamps.

Different hose materials

Different hose materials

Stainless steel hose clamps can be used with hoses made from rubber, silicone, plastics, and other such materials.

What Is The Size Of The Smallest Hose Clamp?

Hose clamps can be of any size.

Small hoses are used for air and various fluids.

Thus, small hose clamps can have a diameter as little as 5 mm.

Hose clamps are sized by the diameter of the hose.

How Much Pressure Can A Hose Clamp Hold?

On average, hose clamps have a clamping force of up to 15 NM, which is enough for most applications.

Do Hose Clamps Open All The Way?

Yes, hose clamps can be opened completely, allowing you to wrap it around hoses or other items without having to slide it over the end.

To close the clamp, all you have to do is push the band’s end back into the slot it came from and tighten the clamp.

Besides, clamp hoses can be reused, so opening them is useful in that sense as well.

What Are Double Hose Clamps?

Double hoses can refer to two things.

One is an installation of manufacturing of a hose clamp that combines 2 other hose clamps.

Thus, the clamping is more secure and is stronger, but improper installation of such a double hose clamp can deform and damage the hose.

Double hose clamp

Double hose clamp

Typically, boat construction uses double clamps, but it can be any other application where extra security is needed.

Another thing a double hose clamp can refer to is when the 2 hose clamps are connected horizontally instead of vertically.

This makes it possible to clamp 2 hoses at the same place, as well as hold them together.

What Is A Hi-Torque Stainless Steel Hose Clamp?

Torque measures rotational force: how much force is needed to make an object rotate.

High torque on hose clamps means that the screw can be tightened more before it snaps.

Thus, the device can clamp tighter, which is good for highly pressurized hoses.

Typical stainless steel hose clamps are required by the SAE to have about 50 in/lbs of torque.

However, high-torque clamps can withstand up to 120 in/lbs.

High-torque hose clamp

 High-torque hose clamp

These clamps are specifically designed for tough and wire-reinforced hoses, as well as for when you need extra safety and reliability for the hose fitting.

High-torque clamps out perform other clamp types because of their more uniform tightening, which provides higher sealing pressure.

They are quicker to fit, have no loose parts that can be lost, and they require less space than any other stainless steel heavy-duty hose clamp.

Why Are Stainless Steel Hose Clamps Perforated?

Perforations are in the traditional design of hose clamps.

Perforations also help to make the strip of metal more flexible, so that the clamp can be tightened more.

Certain tests also found that perforated stainless steel hose clamps have a better compression rating.

The less torque is needed to achieve good compression, the less is the chance of failure of the bolt.

Thus, when comparing clamps, the hose clamp that generates greater compression upon the same torque will be considered a better clamp.

And, perforated clamps often have better compression.

Perforated vs. non-perforated hose clamps

Perforated vs. non-perforated hose clamps

Plus, perforated hose clamps are cheaper to make.

However, these perforations eliminate a significant portion of the band’s cross section, which weakens it.

This allows the band to elongate when tensioned.

The elongation leads to micro-cracking, which—in turn—provides a way for corrosion to creep into stainless steel.

Instead, there are embossed grooves that imitate perforations, but retain the whole of the hose clamp.

What Is A Constant-Tension Stainless Steel Hose Clamp?

A constant-tension hose clamp is a clamp with Belleville washers that compress upon tightening and act like a spring.

When the rubber relaxes, the spring action pulls the band through the housing, making the clamp smaller to compensate for shrinkage in the rubber hose.

They are basically adjustable hose clamps that are great for hoses that have their diameters expand and shrink.

Thus, cooling system hoses may need these stainless steel constant-tension hose clamps.

What Is A Make-A-Clamp Kit?

Make-a-clamp kit is a kit that has parts for making a clamp.

This is a cheap option for individual custom solutions.

Also, if you are an importer, you can request a kit like this and assemble clamps in your country of import: this way you will not spend much money.

Such a kit includes banding, band splice, and an adjustable fastener to create a hose clamp for various applications.

What Is A Stainless Steel Liner Clamp?

A liner clamp has an inner part of it that separates the outer layer from the hose.

Typically, this is used on some perforated stainless steel hose clamps—to separate the perforations from the hose, so that they do not damage it.

Their construction is also similar to worm-gear hose clamps, as the liner mimics the motion of a worm.

What Mounting Support Is Available For Stainless Steel Hose Clamps?

Some of the mounting support types that are available include cradle support, lug support, and clip support.

Cradle support is suitable for removable equipment.

It has a band that is raised and holds the clamp by one point—one side of the clamp contacts the mounted surface.

Lug support provides 3 points of mounting, and this support is made from small brackets that hold bolts, which are then fitted into a surface.

Clip support provides 2 points of mounting.

This support has another type of bracket, which just has holes for screws.

What Standards Are There For Stainless Steel Hose Clamps?

There are several standards that outline the requirements for stainless steel hose clamps.

MIL-SPEC AA-52506 covers stainless steel hose clamps that are used for holding flexible ducts, hoses with a male fitting, and various aerospace, military, or heavy-duty applications.

These hose clamps are generally used on coolant, fuel, oil, vacuum, and emission systems.

The ISO 8177  international standard specifies maximum and minimum dimensions for omega clamps (saddle clamps) installed by two bolts with approximate diameters of 5 mm.

ASTM F2098 covers stainless steel clamps for securing SDR9 cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing to a stainless steel insert—or liner—and plastic insert fittings.

What Coatings Can Stainless Steel Hose Clamps Have?

Hose clamps can be coated with functional and decorative coatings.

Functional coatings include PVC and vinyl.

PVC coating on hose clamp

PVC coating on hose clamp

These coatings provide protection from chemicals, and also protect the hose from the stainless steel surface or possibly sharp edges.

Decorative coatings may be polishes or paint.

Satin polish is an abrasive polish that uses aluminum oxide as the abrasive substance.

This finish produces a fairly smooth surface good for any application of a steel grille, but especially so for cooking.

There is also brushed finish, which shows lines and is rougher to touch; brushed finish may not be great for cooking because the tiny grooves accumulate grease and are harder to clean.
