What Is a Marshalling Cabinet?
Marshalling cabinet is an electrical device that utilizes marshalling technique for inner components.
In electricity, marshalling means the grouping of I/O (inputs/outputs).
This technique is used to make the maintenance of cables and equipment easy, especially in the case with a large number of I/O.
Marshalling cabinets are typically used as a connection tool that is stored between the DCS (distributed control system) panel and the field instruments.
Doing so, it becomes much easier to control and operate the whole electrical system.
What Are The Main Types Of Marshalling Cabinets?
# 1. IP rated marshalling cabinet
KDM is known as a leading manufacturer of IP rated enclosures, including marshaling cabinets.
IP rated marshalling cabinets can be used in harsh conditions and protect the inner equipment from any kind of small particles.
# 2. Marshalling panel building
Marshalling panel building is a separate construction that contains a large number of marshalling panels and additional equipment.
KDM marshaling panel building has a single and double door supported with frame in the center.
These huge constructions are typically used in industrial applications.
# 3. Double-blind marshalling cabinet
A marshalling cabinet can have two separate spaces to isolate different groups of connections from each other.
Doing so it becomes easier to maintain them.
# 4. Outdoor marshalling cabinet
When it comes to the outdoor use of marshalling cabinets, they have to be additionally protected from rain, flood, lighting, and other specific influence.
Thus, KDM uses the most precise design solutions, as well as the most qualitative materials to build outdoor marshalling cabinets.
# 5. Single door marshalling cabinet
KDM single door marshaling cabinet is a great unit that comes with a lockable robust door that protects the equipment and makes its maintenance as easy as possible.
You can choose the type of lock, door, and select the window option as well.
# 6. Waterproof marshalling cabinet
Sometimes marshalling cabinets are used near large sources of water (for example, in pair with marine control panels, near pools, etc.)
Totally waterproof marshalling cabinets exclude the possibility of water intrusion inside of them.
# 7. Custom marshalling cabinet
Electrical applications differ a lot, especially in the modern era.
Some equipment might have a nonstandard specification and would require an exclusive solution.
Due to our manufacturing capabilities, we can offer any imaginable types of cabinets and enclosures.
Can You Name The Main Components Of The Marshalling Cabinet?
Basically, the marshalling cabinet has to contain a needed number of terminal blocks that will be used to connect junction boxes and system panels.
Depending on the system, a few hundred to several thousand signals in the field need to be connected with individual wire pairs to the IO cards of the central control technology.
The individual sensor or actuator cables are gathered in field connection boxes (junction boxes) and routed to the central switch room via high-pos. master cables.
Here there are marshalling cabinets or routing frames, in which these master cables with various signals are consistently connected.
From here, the signals are cross-marshaled to the various IO cards of the DCS via signal type-dependent interface modules.
The interface modules and the IO cards of the control technology are predominantly housed on separate cabinets or frames.
What Kind Of Materials Are Better To Produce Marshalling Cabinets?
There is a huge variety of materials that can be used while manufacturing marshalling cabinets.
Here, let’s begin with the various types of stainless steel.
Stainless steel (Type 304) is a highly corrosion-resistant iron-based alloy containing between 18% and 20% chromium.
Stainless steel is a good corrosion-resistant material that is generally considered non-magnetic.
It exhibits many of the same resistances attributed to fiberglass material and resistance to highly polar solvents such as acetone.
Stainless steel (Type 316/316L) provides improved corrosion resistance to that of other chrome nickel steels.
It is used when exposed to chemical corrodents, as well as marine atmospheres.
It provides improved resistance to salt, some acids, and high temperatures.
Resistance to sulfates and chlorine is less than type 304.
Also, carbon steel can be used to produce marshalling cabinets.
It is a low carbon, hot-finished steel, produced by passing bar stock between a set of rolls at a temperature above the recrystallization temperature.
The scale is removed through a hot, weak sulfuric acid bath, after which an oil film is applied.
Galvanized steel is typically zinc coated to provide extra corrosion resistance.
Hot-dip galvanizing is the most common method of applying zinc coating.
Other methods include electrodeposition and metal spraying.
Galvanizing protects against corrosion by serving as a sacrificial barrier and providing cathodic protection.
Galvannealed steel which is zinc coated and has been annealed after coating.
Doing so, the spelter is fused with the base metal, and the result is a zinc coating that can’t be flaked or peeled while forming.
The surface provides increased paint adhesion over galvanized steel and also superior formability and welding attributes.
The surface may be coated with a protective painted finish to prevent oxidation over time.
The final type of steel is perforated steel.
It has a high strength-to-weight ratio and can be used for ventilation, filtration, and provides versatility for mounting internal enclosure components.
Finally, KDM can use aluminum.
It is a lightweight metal that forms a natural oxide layer which shields its surface from many corrosive elements.
Where Can I Use Marshalling Cabinets?
In general, marshalling cabinets are the must when there is a need for the use of a large amount of inputs/outputs.
These situations often happen in industrial applications, especially where a lot of instruments and machines used together.
Thus, you can use marshalling cabinets in the following cases:
- Industries that utilize machine operation (automotive, food packaging, metal stamping, and many others).
- Various public facilities with a large number of electronic devices involved (medical facilities, shops, and restaurants, power stations of multi-story buildings, etc.)
- Power plants and power distribution facilities.
- Different commercial, educational and sport facilities.
What About The Customization Options For Marshalling Cabinets? How Much Freedom Do I Have?
KDM specialists are glad to provide you any kind of customization option for marshalling cabinets.
These options include:
- Doors.
- Locks and latches.
- Windows.
- Rollers for free-standing cabinets.
- DIN rails for the inner/outer installation of equipment.
- Air conditioning and cooling devices.
- Lighting fixtures, switches, buttons, etc.
Note: KDM is also capable of producing marshalling cabinets according to your concrete specifications and schematics.
How To Mount The Marshalling Cabinet?
KDM can produce marshalling cabinets with various mounting options.
In general, this type of cabinets comes with free-standing and wall-mounting construction.
What Is a Cross-wiring And How To Make It Inside The Marshalling Cabinet?
One of the important interface function of the marshalling cabinet is the cross-wiring.
Cross wiring is always necessary since the incoming field signal and the channel quantity of the I/O card is always different.
For example, let’s say we have a 24 pair incoming field cable that carries 20 field analog signals.
This field signal will be split at least into two analogs 16 channel I/O card.
The First 16 I/O will be in the first 16 channel I/O card and the other 4 will be in the next 16 channel I/O card.
To have this split wiring (cross-wiring) in the system cabinet is not a good practice from the operation and maintenance point of view.
Thus the marshalling cabinet is needed.
Another cause of the cross-wiring is the mix of I/O signals that coming from the field.
The incoming multipair cable can have mixed AI (Analog Input) and AO (Analog Output) signal in the same multipair cable.
This mixed signal will be split in the marshalling cabinet so that the AI signal will be terminated in the dedicated AI termination board and so do the AO signal.
In some applications such as voting application for safety systems, there is a requirement to have the I/O signal allocated in the different I/O cards so that the common fault causes can be avoided.
This application of course once again needs a cross-wiring in the marshalling cabinet.
In a typical application, the marshalling cabinet is having the following cable routing:
- The multipair field cables enter the marshalling cabinet through the bottom of the cabinet.
- Then each wire of the incoming multipair field cable is terminated in the surge protection devices or surge arrester. If there is no requirement of such surge protection devices, each wire is terminated in the terminal block.
- From the surge protection devices, in Non IS application, there will be a cross-wiring that matches the field signal and the I/O address assignment in the termination board. If the system is IS, then before cross-wiring, each wire connection is routed first to the IS Barrier.
- The dedicated system cable that has a ‘plug and plays’ connection is then routed from the termination board to the I/O card in the system cabinet.
- Some termination boards may require a dedicated DC power supply that can be taken from the DC power supply in the marshalling cabinet.
In actual marshalling cabinet arrangement, the equipment arrangement may vary from each automation vendor, but in typical they will have more or less the same equipment.
There are technical reasons to separate analog from digital (noise, mostly), but you can do this in the same cabinet with enough distance between these two groups.
The analog and digital are usually in separate junction boxes in the field, with multi-conductor ‘home run’ cable to the marshalling cabinets.
Running to two separate cabinets may make conduit layout easier.
Ergonomically, for the technicians, one might choose to keep the two signals in separate cabinets, so there is no confusion with troubleshooting, parts, installing new, etc.
How To Differ Marshalling Cabinet And Panel?
There is no real difference between these two definitions.
It could be said that the cabinet refers to the enclosure itself, while by the marshalling panel the inner connections and components are meant.
What Is The Difference Between Marshalling Cabinet And The System Cabinet?
The system cabinet consists of a processor card (CPU), analog input cards, analog output cards, communication cards, etc.
These devices are used to operate various instruments and machines.
To power them up, different cables and wires are used, and to ease their connection separate marshalling cabinets are included in the system.
Once the main cables are terminated, the internal wiring is performed (to route these main cables from marshalling to system cabinet).
What Is Your MOQ For Marshalling Cabinets?
KDM doesn’t have strict MOQ (minimum order quantity) rules for the vast majority of available products.
When it comes to difficult electrical devices (such as a marshalling cabinet) we understand that some of our new clients might be skeptical in our capabilities, or simply don’t require a lot of items at once.
