Ultimate FAQ Guide to Stainless Steel BBQ Burners

What Is A BBQ Burner?

Burners are parts of a grill.

BBQ burners allow gas—natural or propane—to enter at one end and then allow it to escape, which distributes heat across a cooking surface.

Typically, burners are lined with tiny pin-size holes along its edges, which is where the gas escapes.

Burners are always placed underneath cooking grids/grilles as they supply the heat for cooking.

BBQ burners are essential for casual backyard grilling as well as commercial grilling restaurants.

What Are Types Of BBQ Burners?

BBQ burners can be either blue-flame, like traditional grills, and infrared.

Infrared is an intense high-heat burner that reaches high temperatures from a—usually—a ceramic plate that sits on top of the burner.

Infrared stainless steel burner

Infrared stainless steel burner

These are great for searing meats.

They warm up fast, have quicker cooking times, hotter searing temperatures, and all result in less total gas usage.

Also, infrared burners are great for rotisserie cooking, which is when you want to apply equal heat everywhere, like in an oven.

However, infrared burners are not universal, so they require special installation.

They are usually in a panel format, but they can be U-shaped as well.

Blue-flame burners are traditional burners that are universal and can be in a variety of configurations.

How Big Are Stainless Steel BBQ Burners?

This depends on the size of the grill, but typically, BBQ burners range from 13-17 inches, or 30-50 centimeters in length.

KDM can make custom burners with different dimensions.

Is Stainless Steel or Cast Iron Better For BBQ Burners?

Stainless steel does not produce the high heat that cast iron does, but stainless steel retains heat much better.

This means that you can save on fuel and grill for a longer time period.

It also means that there is less of a chance that the food you are grilling will get burnt.

Stainless steel is also easier to clean.

Furthermore, stainless steel is more resilient and durable in harsh environments that have oil, heat, water, salt, and other things.

Cast iron, on the other hand, is more fragile than that—any crack will make it unusable.

Cast iron BBQ burner

To prolong the life of a cast iron BBQ burner, it can be coated in porcelain enamel.

Another material for a BBQ burner is aluminized steel, which is not as durable as stainless steel, but more durable than mild steel.

Aluminized steel BBQ burner

Stainless steel worktops can be made with steel grades 304, 316, and 430.

Stainless steel is made by adding chromium, nickel, and molybdenum in different proportions to the iron-carbon alloy.

Steel grades differ in the content of all these additives.

316 stainless steel protects the best against salt spray, certain acids, and high temperatures because of its higher concentration of molybdenum.

Grade 316 is, thus, really good for BBQ burners: cooking and cleaning.

Grade 304 is cheaper and more common in general use, but it is also very durable.

Steel grade 430 is also very popular and cheap, but less durable than grades 304 and 316.

We especially recommend grades 430 and 316 for stainless steel BBQ burners: because one is cheap and the other is exceptionally durable.

How Long Do Stainless Steel BBQ Burners Last?

BBQ burners can last roughly 10 years.

Stainless steel BBQ burners will last longer because of the durability of the metal.

However, to prolong the lifetime of your BBQ burners, you should clean them sometimes to remove the grease and salts that can stain the metal.

Stainless steel will also get heat stain and tea-staining, but that is not corrosion.

Stainless steel can get corroded by harsh chemicals, so limit such cleaning agents as bleach to prolong the life of your BBQ burners.

Because burners operate at such high temperatures—typically 300 to 650 degrees Fahrenheit—and are subject to corrosive drippings from cooking meat, burners wear out quickly.

Rusted BBQ burner

 Rusted BBQ burner

A BBQ burner can typically operate effectively for 1-5 years with average usage.

When the burner becomes significantly corroded, or ‘rusted out’, gas escapes through the corroded areas, creating ‘hot spots’, which make cooking difficult.

Stainless steel can also get rusted after 10 years or so under the effect of various acids.

Thus, you should replace your BBQ burners after several years.

What Are After-Market Burners?

These are BBQ burners that you buy to replace the old ones.

We recommend purchasing stainless steel replacements because they will serve you longer.

Before replacing your BBQ burners, you should make sure that the new burners are close in size to the original ones, and that gas can be supplied to the new burners in a similar way.

How Do Stainless Steel BBQ Burners Work?

Burners are hollow with gas inlet holes and outlet ports.

For each inlet there is a separate control on the control panel of the grill.

Many cheaper grills have just one burner, but more expensive BBQ grills have a separate burner for each control.

Burners are situated at the bottom of the grill.

They can have ‘legs’ or rest directly on the grill casting.

Gas is supplied through venturi tubes, which can be permanently attached to the burner or removable.

At the other end of the venturi tube there is the gas valve, which is connected to the control knob on the front of the grill.

When the user turns the knob, the valve opens and allows gas to flow through the venturi tube and into the burner.

Although, some burners—usually those in a pipe configuration—do not require venturi tubes, and connect directly to the valve.

This burner design works off the venturi effect.

Venturi effect

   Venturi effect

As gas is being forced out through a small orifice mounted at the end of the burner, it pulls air along and mixes inside the burner tube.

The mixed fuel and air are then forced out of the burner ports, and get ignited by an electrode spark.

Gas needs to mix with air at a specific ratio for the fire to be proper.

Blue flames mean that combustion of fuel is efficient, so with blue-flame burners you are not wasting gas.

Proper and incomplete combustion

Proper and incomplete combustion

If you get a flame with yellow or orange, it means that there is unburnt fuel and not enough air has mixed with the gas to get proper full combustion.

The size of the burner orifice is critical for that.

If the tube is too small, or the orifice too large, you get incomplete mixing and incomplete combustion.

This is why it is important to calculate the proper dimensions of the burners and their ports.

You can control the height of the flames with the control dial on your grill.

What Are Some Configurations Of Stainless Steel BBQ Burners?

As mentioned above, stainless steel BBQ burners can be divided into 2 categories: single burner with multiple controls, and multiple burners with a single control.

Common configurations of multi-control BBQ burners can be referred to as dual burners, with two gas inlets and two corresponding control knobs—right and left.

These are easier to replace since there will likely be one burner in the grill.

The most common type of these stainless steel BBQ burners is called ‘H’ burners and resemble the capital letter ‘H’ turned on its side.

H-style stainless steel BBQ burner

Another popular shape is oval, which looks like an oval, and can be called ‘bar burner’ as well.

Oval stainless steel BBQ burner

There are also ‘Figure 8’, and ‘Bowtie’ burners.

These look like a sideways number ‘8’ with straight edges, or, if the edges are curved, then it looks like a bowtie.

Bowtie stainless steel BBQ burner

       Bowtie stainless steel BBQ burner

These configurations can also come in single- or double-pipe designs, which corresponds to how many controls there are.

Bowtie, H-style and oval burners are often big and distribute heat all over the grill in a more-or-less even manner.

Some burners can even have 3 venturi pipes, which is common for oval burner designs.

Triple oval stainless steel BBQ burner

Triple oval stainless steel BBQ burner

Some of the common configurations of single-control BBQ burners include ‘Pipe’, ‘Ring’, or ‘Rail’ burners.

Pipe BBQ burners look like pipes or tubes, and they have flames all along its length.

They are all mostly straight since they are only required to heat one portion of the grill.

However, pipe burners can be curved like the letters ‘U’, ‘S’, or in a custom way.

Pipe stainless steel BBQ burner with drip cap

Also, pipe burners can have a drip cap to prevent excessive burning of meat, and no prevent acidic drippings from damaging the burner itself.

In pipe burners, there are typically 8 inches of tube length that do not have holes ports but are used to guide gas.

Similarly, other burners have this so-called ‘throat’ without ports, but the lengths vary.

Ring burners are shaped like a ring or a circle; sometimes they can be shaped like clovers as well.

Ring stainless steel BBQ burner

Such burners are especially popular to fry fish on.

Rail burners are thicker and flatter than pipe burners, so they are often used in bigger BBQ grills and BBQ cabinets.

Rail stainless steel BBQ burner

Rail stainless steel BBQ burner

Single-control BBQ burners may be more cumbersome to replace, but it gives the user the flexibility to place the burners in any way they need, depending on the amount of food being cooked and the desired temperature.

For example, a gas grill may have 3 pipe burners that run from the front to the back of the grill: a left burner, center burner, and right burner.

These configurations are great for commercial kitchens because they create several cooking areas on one big grill, which are all independently controlled.

You can install several configurations of burners in one grill, so you can have an oval burner in the center and ring burners around it.

This allows you to distribute heat in a custom way.

Why Are There So Many BBQ Burner Configurations?

Other than depending on the number of controls, and the size and shape of the grill itself, there are other reasons for having such a variety of configurations for BBQ burners.

There are differences in the ignition assembly of the grill.

Although the module is always integrated into the control panel with the control knobs, the electrodes that spark a fire inside the grill can be placed in different locations.

Sometimes the electrodes are screwed to the front wall of the inner firebox, sometimes the electrodes are screwed to the back wall.

The electrodes are often screwed to the burner in between the venturi tubes, and sometimes the electrodes are even clamped to the burner itself.

Plus, the configuration of the electrodes plays a role as well.

Thus, the configuration of the burner depends on that.

What Accessories Are Available For Stainless Steel BBQ Burners?

The most important grill accessories, or related parts, for burners are burner brace-rails and cross-over tubes.

Burner brace-rails are long metal strips that sit at the back of the burner firebox.

Stainless steel burner brace-rail

It is mostly used to hold the burner—or burners—in place.

However, brace-rails also house cross-over or carry-over tubes.

These are used to carry the flame from one burner to the next, letting you light up all burners at once, without having to light up each one individually.

Stainless steel cross-over tube

This can be helpful if you have a big grill with several controls, but you don’t need them at the moment.

For example, if you are cooking a lot of meat at once.

Several controls are helpful if you are grilling different things, like meat and vegetables, at once.

KDM offers both of these types of accessories!

Additionally, burners can have drip caps to prevent corrosive drippings from damaging the burner, and to protect your food from charring.

Stainless steel flame tamer

These are also called flame tamers for that reason.

Another accessory for stainless steel BBQ burners is a stand called ‘legs’.

These legs can be used to make the burners mobile.

They allow you to take them out and use them independently in hog roasters, maple syrup evaporation, and BBQ pits.

However, be careful when doing that!

Lastly, many venturi tubes and burners have little screens inside that protect from insects crawling in, but this feature is nearly always a default one.

Are There Adjustable BBQ Burners?

Stainless steel BBQ burners can be adjustable.

They can be pushed in to be shorter and pulled out to be longer.

This allows you not to worry about matching the size of the old burners to the size of the new ones, and to the capacity of the grill.

Adjustable stainless steel BBQ burner

This is great if you are a business owner or distributor because then you don’t have to order custom burners for all types of grills in your business.

However, adjustable BBQ stainless steel burners can be only in the pipe configuration, so keep that in mind.

How Are Stainless Steel BBQ Burners Installed?

Stainless steel BBQ burners can be installed in different ways: horizontal, vertical, and ledge mounts.

In a horizontal mount, the tab of the burner is mounted to the brace-rail in the back.

Horizontal mount

  Horizontal mount

In the vertical mount, a bracket pointing up is applied to the brace-rail, and the tab of the burner is applied to the bottom of the bracket.

Vertical mount

Finally, in the ledge mount, there are 2 brackets that are applied to each other, and the tab of the burner.

Ledge mount

Ledge mount

The installation depends on the type of brace-rail the grill is using, and the type of the burner itself.

These 3 installation methods pertained to pipe stainless steel BBQ burners.

Other types of burners can be simply placed on the bottom of a grill and attach venturi tubes and other parts to the burner valves.

This is an easy process and can be done without professional help.

What Issues Can Stainless Steel BBQ Burners Have?

Stainless steel BBQ burners can have several issues you should look out for.

Sometimes, the flames will not light at all, or they can be yellow, or not get hot enough.

This may mean that the ports or venturi tubes are blocked.

After a lot of cooking, certain acidic salts can harden and block these passages, so maintenance is required.

Drip caps prevent this from happening.

Also, various debris, insects, and spiders can get stuck in a venturi tube, which would also require special maintenance.

Old BBQ burners

Old BBQ burners

Sometimes, flames will flare up, which signifies grease buildup, so it should be cleaned once the BBQ grill is cooled down.

Cross-over channels may not work due to plugged ports, which must be cleaned.

As for infrared burners, sometimes their ceramic tiles may get overheated or overloaded with grease, making the burners fade out.

If the ceramic tiles are overloaded, then just burn the burner on high heat for a while.

If you find any cracks on a stainless steel burner, you should order another one because the cracked burner will soon fall apart.
