Ultimate FAQ Guide to Stainless Steel Vents

What Types Of Stainless Steel Vents Are There?

Louvered openings just provide a way for heat to escape, letting the air balance itself out.

Louvers are horizontal slats that cover the opening.

They are angular to let in air, but keep dust, rain, and condensation out.

Stainless steel louvers

        Stainless steel louvers

There are several designs of these louvers, such as single-slat or double-slat.

Single-slat louvers face out, but double-slat louvers can face either way.

Besides louvered openings, you can have simple openings or holes that are circular or oval in shape, but these aren’t weather-sealed, so would only be suitable for indoor uses.

Another type of passive vents, or openings, is a mesh vent.

It consists of a wire mesh that is placed into a cutout in an enclosure or duct.

This gives a bigger venting surface, letting in more air.

However, it is also not protected against ingress.

Grille and mesh vent

There are also stainless steel marine vents.

Cowl and clamshell vents are commonly used to vent bilges or as intake air supplements for active vents.

A cowl vent is a hooded weatherproof vent fitted to the outside of a wall.

They can be used in conjunction with either flat or round channel ducting, and are designed to prevent draughts coming back through the vent into a ventilated room.

They are available in several shapes, sizes, and profiles.

Cowl vents can be connected to 3- and 4-inch-diameter hoses so the airflow can be directed as needed.

Cowl stainless steel vent

The cowl vent’s large bell-like opening can be positioned to face the breeze, and these are capable of funneling large volumes of air into the boat.

Dorade boxes provide a mounting surface for cowl vents and incorporate either a water-sensitive valve that opens or closes automatically to let air in and water out, or have baffles and drains built in to eliminate water intrusion below deck.

Clamshell vents are used when a boat needs a vent, but a taller one would foul lines or restrict crew movement.

Finally, V-shaped or big-hooded vents have big louvers, allowing a bigger flow of air.

There also are round exhaust vents, which are concealed, and look elegant, which is a great option for hotels, restaurants, and other fancy places.

There can be grille stainless steel vents as well, with an egg-crate pattern.

These do not direct the airflow, but they passively allow it.

As for regular stainless steel vents, then they could be of many shapes, including circular, rectangular, square, and even other shapes.

How Can Stainless Steel Vents Be Modified?

We can add air filters, screens, and fans upon your request.

Air filters are the most common addition to regular enclosure vents.

Your filters can be whatever you need them to do.

They are often made from fabric to filter out dust, various flyings, even fumes.

If you want the air to be cooler in the enclosure, then a cooling air filter or a cooling screen can be put in the back of the vent.

If you need the air ionized or filtered from dust, we can do this as well.

Screens also protect ducts from insects that may enter.

The main difference between an air filter and a screen is that air filters don’t restrict the airflow as much as screens do.

Screen vent

   Screen vent

So, if you need a lot of airflow and filtering or cooling action, an air filter will work well.

However, if you are more concerned with filtering, then a screen might be better.

Filters and screens can be treated with hydrophobic or oleophobic substances, meaning that they repel water or oil/soap.

This is useful for kitchen and bathroom vents.

Plus, the vents can have domes or hoods to guard the main opening against dust, rain, flyings, etc.

Are There Adjustable Stainless Steel Vents?

Stainless steel vent louvers may be adjustable.

With a pull chain or a lever, the angle the louvers are directed at can be changed.

Thus, the direction of airflow will also change.

Plus, this allows for the louvers to be closed or opened to increase the airflow or to stop it completely.

Does The Shape Of Vented Openings Matter?

The shape of the opening lets in certain gusts of air and channels air in particular ways.

Bigger openings tend to let in more air, but also create a slower flow of air, as opposed to pressurized by small openings air.

As for the shape of openings—square, oval, or circular—it does not matter much.

Also, the shape of the louver, or cover, matters since it protects the vent from dust and dripping, and directs the airflow.

Specifically, the louvers have to be directed down, but the angle at which they are directed down changes where the air goes.

Is It Important How The Louvers Are Placed On A Stainless Steel Vent?

Different placement of louvers changes how air is directed around the room.

Vertical louvers allow horizontal adjustments, while horizontal louvers adjust the vertical height of the airflow.

Vertical louvers also tend to be more aesthetic.

There may be vents that combine horizontal and vertical louvers, dividing the vent into parts.

Besides, there could be vents with a square or circular pattern, and these are called ‘diffusers’.

Stainless steel diffuser

They provide a uniform flow of air and have 4-way air deflection.

Linear louvers may be placed in 1 or more columns, depending on how you want air to flow and aesthetics.

What Types Of Louvers Are There For Stainless Steel Vents?

There are sinusoidal, chevron, thin line, drainable, dual drainable, and acoustic louvers.

Sinusoidal louvers are great for pressure drops, and they are sight-proof as well, meaning that they are concealed and will not be visible.

Chevron louvers protect well against rain and dripping, and they are sight-proof as well.

Thin line louvers are used for indoor applications, where dust and water are not worthwhile concerns.

Drainable louvers are basically thin line louvers, but with a fold on the bottom to catch any dripping water or condensation.

Dual drainable louvers have 2 of such folds to capture more water.

Both types are relatively low-maintenance.

Acoustic louvers are thick because they enclose a soundproofing core that stops sound from traveling between rooms, as well as the sound of water or air in the ducts from entering rooms.

Why Use Stainless Steel For Vents?

Stainless steel is more resilient to various weather and other conditions.

For example, sun rays, rain, salt, and wind.

This is great for outdoor vents, such as in air ducts that lead outside.

Furthermore, stainless steel protects from rust, so the grille will serve you longer than other types of steel would.

Usually, 14 gauge steel is used for vents, which is about 2 mm.

Stainless steel vents can be made with steel grades 304, 316, and 430.

Stainless steel is created by adding chromium, nickel, and molybdenum in different proportions to the iron-carbon alloy.

Steel grades differ in the content of all additives.

Grade 316 stainless steel provides the best protection against salt spray, certain acids, and high temperatures, due to the addition of molybdenum.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel

This is why 316 is used more for vents in harsher environments.

However, grade 304 is cheaper and more common in general use.

This is why most stainless steel vents use 304 steel.

It is also 316L or 304L.

Grades 316L and 304L have a lower carbon content, making it a little bit stronger.

However, they are not very frequently used in the market.

Steel grade 430 is also very popular and cheap, but less durable than grade 304.

Do Stainless Steel Vents Rust?

‘Stainless’ is a misleading name; this type of steel does get stained, but it does not rust unless it comes in contact with concentrated bleach.

Stainless steel can become discolored, appearing like rust, but it is not corroded.

Staining

Staining

This is known as tea-staining, but it does not affect the lifetime of your stainless steel vents.

Smoke and salt are examples of substances that can discolor your stainless steel vents.

However, if that happens, only the aesthetic value of the grille is damaged, not the functionality.

Where Should Stainless Steel Vents Be Installed?

Stainless steel vents can be used in many applications of commercial and residential sectors.

These include all home wall vents, such as bathroom vents and kitchen vents, various extractors, air conditioning units, gas, electric dryers, enclosures, and much more.

Louvers typically are installed in lockers, bilges, deck boxes, lazarettes, and behind refrigeration and electronic equipment.

How To Install A Stainless Steel Vent?

Stainless steel vents are very easy to install.

Installing stainless steel vent

  Installing stainless steel vent

Vents can be easily screwed in place via flange holes, or vents can be just pushed into duct openings.

If you are requesting stainless steel vents that will be pushed into a duct, then the vent will be more than just a covering.

Thus, you need to specify different dimensions that are in 3D rather than in 2D.

Plus, the front of the vent is usually bigger than the pushed in part, due to flanges that hide the duct and secure the fitting.

Vents can also be layered on top of each other upon installation.

Specifically, if the vents have different properties, such as a mesh vent underneath a louvered vent, or a filter under holes.

Vents, in general, are simple, they are not mechanisms that get worn out.

Plus, our vents are made from stainless steel, making them very resistant to heat, corrosion, impact, dust, and everything else.

Therefore, your stainless steel vent—no matter what the design or application is—will last for years.

Stainless steel vents can last up to 30 years.

So, with our stainless steel vents, you don’t have to worry about running out of its time.

What Coatings For Stainless Steel Vents Are There?

You can request various polishes, paints, and coatings for decorative and functional purposes.

Satin polish is an abrasive polish that uses aluminum oxide as an abrasive substance.

This finish produces a fairly smooth surface good for any application of a steel grille, but especially so for cooking.

There is also a brushed finish, which shows lines and is rougher to touch.

However, tiny grooves in the brushed finish accumulate grease and dust, making it harder to clean.

Brushed vs satin polish

Brushed vs satin polish

Mirror polish creates a very smooth mirror surface.

It is easier to clean, but any scratches, vapor condensation, and fingerprints are very prominent on such a surface.

A matte polish gives the surface a very soft, vintage, ceramic look.

It guards against fingerprints and has a grainy texture.

Epoxy coatings consist of an epoxy resin and a hardener.

This type of coating is very durable and is suitable for harsher applications like outdoor vent covers, serving functionally as well as aesthetically.

Stainless steel vents can also be powder coated, which has excellent edge coverage.

Powder coating is when powder paint is electrostatically sprayed onto a metal surface.

  ainted stainless steel vents

   Painted stainless steel vents

Both coatings—epoxy and powder—can be of any color.

We can also paint it according to your color swatch, Pantone, RGB, or RAL color request.

You can also request different decorative coatings that add color to stainless steel.

Such coatings are usually colored metals that are electroplated on top of stainless steel.

Electroplating is a process that involves passing an electrical current through 2 metals, where one metal takes ions from the other metal.

Electroplated coatings

 Electroplated coatings

Stainless steel can be electroplated with various metals that all have their own properties and colors.

For a yellow, orange, or warm brown color, you can request brass, bronze, or gold.

Copper goes for reddish and pink colors.

Chrome, nickel, cadmium, and pewter give cool-toned silvers and greys.

If you need a custom polish, contact us and we will design it for you!
